Jeff Gordon. Tony Stewart. Ricky Rudd. Many of the prolific drivers of NASCAR that are known and loved did not begin their motor racing career in the beautiful high-speed machines they race today. Many a meager beginnings have racing starts on 125 shifter karts. Commonly referred to as karts, 125 shifter karts are a subdivision of race karts known for their high speed and various precision  capabilities.

Erected out of California, Art Ingels is known to have born the first of the 125 shifter karts in 1956. Spirited with a passion as a mechanic, Ingels set out in his spare time to build a petite speed racer with just spare parts, including the engine from a junk lawn mower. In more recent times, equipment specifically designed for 125 shifter karts, including tires, high-speed engines and frames, are manufactured by companies who specialize in 125 shifter karts for sale. Shifters continue to flourish and captivate racers today in small towns and large cities all across the U.S., as well as overseas continents such as Europe and Australia.

The more common types of 125 shifter karts are sprint karts and enduro karts. Sprint karts are raced for their speed while enduro karts compete in longer battles of endurance on the track. The main bodies of the 125 shifter karts are steel tubings with wheel-bases of about 40 inches and bucket seats that sit slightly 2-3 inches off the ground. Otherwise known as the chassis, the mainframes of the 125 shifter karts have to be quite flexible, with no suspension, due to the lack of space and necessity of weight reduction. Open chassis and caged chassis can be found on different 125cc shifter karts. With caged 125 shifter karts, a roll cage surrounds the driver. It is used to protect the driver, especially during enduro races.

The engines in 125cc shifter karts are what separate them from their relation, the soapbox cars. One of the most critical kart parts is the engine and can be purchased as a whole, or as individual parts such as the ignition, filter, and exhaust. Complete engines can be purchased from $199 and up, whereas the prices for individual parts vary.

There are two different types of engines which can push the shifter kart to incredible speeds for its small size. Originally taken from motorcycles are ‘two stroke' engines. Increasing popularity of 125 shifter karts now has specialized manufacturers creating specific two strokes to power karts. ‘Four stroke' engines are comparable to those in lawn movers, with the added convenience of air cooling that generally produces between five and 20 horsepower. Depending on design and weight, a 125cc kart can accelerate from 0-60 mph in just a fraction over three seconds and reaches top speeds of 115 mph.

The wheels on 125 shifter karts are made either of aluminum or magnesium alloy. Kart tires are commonly made of the same materials as the tires on standard race cars. They are considerably smaller due to the low profile of the kart, but are still quite wide to enhance grip and control on the track at high speeds. Additionally, different tires are employed for different track conditions. Kart wheels and tires can be purchased reasonably, most costing the average consumer less than $60.

In addition to purchasing shifter kart parts and pieces, there are retail stores and websites that offer kits and kart packages. These can include most parts and are available with different tire sizes and wheels, depending on the kit chosen. Mid-priced packages range from $400 to $600, but can become as limitless as a customer's creative potential, and budget.

An ageless sport, karting is for those that aspire to be in motor sports or for those that have a need for speed. The extraordinary thrills of racing coupled with the economical cost of buying or building 125 shifter karts are enough to turn any hobbyist into an outright enthusiast.
